The Durham Region Unemployed Help Centre offers many types of workshops, each one designed to help job seekers at different stages in the job search. Our workshops are extensive and informative; when you leave a workshop, you will have all of the skills and knowledge necessary to get the job interviews that you have the skills for.

Workshops for Youths and Adults

All workshops are facilitated in both Oshawa and Pickering.

*NEW* WHMIS Orientation (Pickering Location)

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Orientation will allow you to recognize hazardous materials which exist in your workplace, to work safely, and recognize hazard symbols, labels and material safety data sheets. At the end of the session you will understand the responsibilities of both employees and employers when handling hazardous materials in the workplace. Participants will receive a WHMIS certificate upon completion.

Computer Training

Interested in improving your computer skills? Register for our computer training sessions that provide training in the following areas: computer basics, MS office (Word, Excel, Power Point), and job searching.

2-Day Job Finding Boot Camp

Learn the top job hunting strategies, how to write a résumé and how to ace your interviews. Book an optional personal coaching session one week later to critique your résumé.

Building Resiliency

We understand that job seekers go through many different challenges which can take an emotional toll. Come learn strategies to be more resilient and turn these challenges into opportunities.

Ace Your Interviews

Résumés & Cover Letters

You need a résumé and cover letter that ‘will get you in the door’. Improve your opportunity for employment. Come in and learn how to do all you can to tailor your marketing tools to the job you are interested in and improve your chances of getting an interview. Please bring your existing résumé and cover letter for a critique following the session.

Second Career Orientation - Eligibility & Application/Career Research

Navigate the application process on this Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities retraining program. Learn how to gather the necessary information to help you in your decision making and to put forward a solid application.

Weekdays Passport To Safety Training (Pickering Location)

The Passport to Safety is an online test and transcript program that consists of straightforward, no-fail multiple choice tests to help eliminate needless injuries and preventable deaths of Canadians in a workplace. Passport to Safety supports the vision that Canadians have the power to influence the evolution of safe workplace cultures.

Weekdays Self-Directed MS Office Tutorials (Pickering Location)

Learn Basic, Intermediate and Advanced computer skills through computer based tutorials (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to help you brush up on your Microsoft skills. We also offer the Mavis Beacon tutorial for keyboarding exercises and speed testing skills.

Weekdays Self-Directed Quick Books & Simply Accounting Programs (Pickering Location)

QuickBooks will teach you how to use features from entering data to tracking billable hours, managing inventory, working with merchant services, managing payroll, and much more.

Computer Training

Computer Training courses are facilitated in Oshawa (5pm - 7pm) and self-directed in Pickering with 3-hour tutorial time slots in the morning (9am-12pm) or in the afternoon (12pm-3pm). Computer training sessions are basic introductions to each of the software programs. We would be pleased to assist you in researching training institutions for higher level training.

Intro to Computers

Learn computer basics through interactive tutorials.

Microsoft Excel

Develop skills working with Microsoft's powerful spreadsheet program.

Microsoft Word

Make documents proficiently with the most widely used word processing software.


Learn to use quick, easy and effective accounting software. QuickBooks will teach you how to use features from entering data to tracking billable hours, managing inventory, working with merchant services, managing payroll, and much more.

Simply Accounting

Learn to easily manage cash flow, bill payments, invoicing and expenses electronically with this workshop.
